Review: In the famous Gothenburg sound, the second album by Cenotaph brings together melodic and abstract death metal in a flowing and decompressed style of aggressive structures. Rhythms and melodies collaborate for a uniquely poetic meshing of ideas while metaphors color moods. Like inspiration At the Gates, this band use transitions to introduce melody as a counter-theme, giving the music a vaguely Satanic air of opposition underneath its lush and sensual sound. Growls of bass intensity push the staggered layers of riffing forward over strict meters of precise drumming, while lead guitar leans toward a doom metal adaptation of heavy metal soloing. Each song maintains its character within the subtle jazz and progressive stylings, and within a genre overflowing with bands Cenotaph maintain individuality. This vivid atmospheric metal unifies its themes by connecting melody through violence.
