Graveland
The Celtic Winter (No Colours) 36:20
1996 CD [BUY] $14
Review: Unfurling from the ashes of raw black metal are the literal and direct motions of aspiration rising from the ruins, just as black metal resurrected itself with bands such as Graveland. Putting melody back into black metal, Graveland use their distinctive note combinations as structure and not as effect as the later Swedish bands do. The result is something that is both sharp as obsidian and majestic through its creation of melodic space. Minimalistic and acerbic, this music saws through the most basic riffs before wandering on journeys of recombinant pathways to the same clear idea. Few artists can create melody this vibrant, and in equally aggressive music the effect is breathtaking.

Production: Deliberately blown but workable. 1. Intro (3:16)
2. Call of the black forest (4:24)
3. Hordes of Empire (4:41)
4. The Night of Fullmoon (5:32)
5. Prolog (3:18)
6. The Gates to the Kingdom of Darkness (6:43)
7. The Return of Funeral Winds (8:25)
