Review: Thundergods of blasphemous death metal, Immolation are known for their rolling symphonies of schizophrenic heresy and thrashing mayhem, a style expanded further on this album through internal melody and finer structure to solidify their sound.
The first Immolation album, "Dawn of Possession," was rushing-at-you death metal in a different vision than conventional New York metal, bending melodies from changing power chord riffs, as Slayer had done, but with a dark insistence upon a furious conclusion. The third is controlled anger and rages with a depth of harmony that complements a veritable powerhouse of riffbuilding. Deep and heavily chanted death metal vocals lay a monotone flattening of existence over seamlessly shifting rhythms of guitar and drums that power through a collection of related riff forms per song.
Songs are well-paced for powerful conclusions and a vast feeling of emptiness, which is a fitting tribute to this album's ability to be both violent and artistic within a pure death metal setting.
