Review: Sweeping melodic black metal speaks violence through harsh and abstracted melodies layered in naturalistic structure unique to each song of organic but epic black metal. These songs intensify to a peak release and breakdown, at which point shorter riffs of lesser range are replaced by winding melodies in ambience of ancient warfare. Remaining basic through its use of the space between two notes as the basis for each song, these epic dirges work out through numerous variations in riff and song structure customized to a sense of story being told. In this album the essence of black metal distilled toward the end of its career is distilled: an ethereal, ancient transcendence held suspended in the atmosphere of emotion meeting logic.
